It's relatively simple, in theory.
One guy is the Dungeon Master, basically the Narrator, and everyone else is players.
For Example: DM: 'You find yourself in the town area, you see farmer working in a nearby field, and a small thatched building with a sign that says 'Inn' what would you like to do?'
'BURN DOWN THE INN!'
'DM: OK... *You roll some Dice, in this case, it's an ability roll, and if you roll a certain number, HOORAY! The inn is burned down*
You find a Pitch Fork dug through your chest. Seems the farmers didn't like the fact you got rid of their drinking hole...
You're dead!

Next time I need to play it on hard.. I think the only boss I ever died on was Kraid. (Ridley left me with only about 60 energy left though. XD)

Wow. If Bulbapedia is to be believed, there's a block of text in the files for Pokemon FR/LG that reads "By the way, if you like this game, buy it or die.", which would obviously only be accessable by looking through a rom. It's been verified it wasn't added by a third party and is in the files for the real game.
